Problem with logging in! plz help

I made an account and Im almost positive I have done everything right to install the server but when I tried to log in to the server it said cannot connect to server and when i tried to change the server on the serverlist the names were there but the server stats were just a dash (-) if anyone has suggestions or if the server is just down plz post. Ty for reading.
